Something about a supercharged Northstar just stirs me in all the right ways.

As much as northstar's can be a serious pain in the ass....
That's one classy way to go fast.

I'd still lean towards the LSX motors but still, the STS-V just does it for me.

I never realized the STS-V had the Northstar.
The CTS-V never came with a Northstar.
1st gen's had a 5.7L LS series motor.

It's an STS-V, not a CTS-V

Oh definitely.
I hate working on northstars, talk about over complicated.
LSX always wins. But these are really cool cars.

I know the car pictured is a STS-V which was a supercharged 4.4L Northstar.

I kind of dig them too, super stealthy, but a supercharged northstar is a one way ticket to expensive frustration.

Realized that after I posted.....Fixed the comment......Never knew that the STS-V had the Northstar.....Didn't it come out the same year as the CTS-V? Interesting that they would keep with the Northstar motor. Perhaps it wasn't feasible to redesign the k-member and whatever else needed?

It came out after. If I'm not mistaken, the original CTS-V was built from 2004-07 while the STS-V 2006-2009.
I suppose those engines are tougher than they look.

Maybe when that blows, swap in an LSA out of a never CTS-V or go for the full Monty LS9.

Except the STS is transverse with a different bell housing, it would be a heck of a job.

One guy used to show up to our marauder meets with an STS-V. He had a blue marauder that was stolen out of his garage (they ripped the door off the house) while he was away on business (US Marshall). So he got the STS-V as a replacement.

I didn't know the these things existed until late last year. One blew by me on the freeway while I was doing 80. I decided to catch up and see what it was. I was really surprised to see a "V" badge on an STS.
Full sized sedan, supercharged V8, American..... Made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

I concur, those things are amazing. There is one in my apartment complex, and every time I drive by it, it always makes me do a second glance. Very classy, plus the power, yup!

Yes they are. The STS-V and XLR-V share the same 4.4L supercharged NorthStar. My race tune is just over 500RWHP right now and the motor hasn't missed a beat. I think it probably has to do with the fact that they destroked it from 4.6L to 4.4 to handle the extra stress of the blower.

"expensive frustration"?????
Not really. This is an extremely mature engine. All frustrating issues have been resolved. Expensive to replace yes, but any engine is expensive to replace (I have a spare in a crate just in case). The primary frustration with the cars are the lack of go-fast parts, but our tight knit community has a few people making some great strides (pullies, intakes, 90mm throttle body, exhausts, headers, intercoolers, there's even a turbo kit). The second frustration is the lack of experienced tuners. Lastly, there are just way too many interconnected computer systems.
The STS-V is not traverse mounted and mates up to a normal 6L80 tranny. Hammerhead.., you're thinking about the base model STS.
Here's mine

I had no idea they changed it to longitudinal! Wow, talk about commitment. Thanks.

The aero themed El Dorado! She must rip with that much power. I think it's the same principle Chevrolet used when using the 6.2l LS3 as the base for the LS9 rather than simply supercharging the LS7. Thicker cylinder walls would handle the boost better.

Be carful though the Northstars while they sound great, OHC, and V8 they are plagued with engine problems. The head bolts are not strong enough and separate and leak coolant and oil into the pistons.

Um the base 2005-12 STS has a longitudinal engine too...

All of those STS have longitudinal engines, they're basically bigger CTSs.

So they aren't at all related to the Seville STS/SLS architecture? Shows you how little attention the sts gets.

The 2005-11 STS is on the Sigma platform, not the old Seville's G body. They don't share much apart from the Northstar.

The weight kills most of the fun. XLR-V is 3800lbs+ and STS-V is 4200lbs+.

Those problems were fixed well before these started shipping. Very, very, very few 2000+ model year engines have any head bolt issues. Coolant issues were always an owner maintenance caused problem (change the coolant regularly as prescribed by OEM and no problems exist) although the reservoir tanks tended to crack, but that's not technically an engine problem. And for the uneducated, oil in the pistons was by design.

Im not so sure about that we had an 01 deville 4.6L that had the head problem. The car even had less than 80K on it and we replaced the water pump and other stuff thinking it was going bad because the car would over heat very easily but turned out it was the head bolts. And i believe they fixed it in 04 to 05, which now that i think about it, is when that style STS came out.
The link explains it better but I highly doubt the coolant issue were maintenance problems seeing that the pistons would force air back into the coolant and creating bubbles while pushing the AF into the piston. In turn it would make the cars overheat due to the air in the system and lack of coolant.
